Anne Hathaway and the cupcake kerfuffle

Actress Anne Hathaway sent the internet abuzz when she demonstrated her cupcake sandwich technique on the Kelly Clarkson Show in March. Producers clipped the scene and recirculated it for Hathaway’s November 12 birthday.

Here’s a longer version and one of many print reports, headlined “Anne Hathaway’s Hack Will Change How You Eat Cupcakes Forever.”

Enter journalist Sam Rubin, a veteran TV reporter and longtime analyst of cupcakes in general and Sprinkles in particular. He countered with a five-minute takedown of the technique credited to Hathaway. Rubin says he has eaten cupcakes this way for 30 years.

“I do this with cupcakes all the time,” Rubin says on the KTLA 5 Los Angeles morning news. “I literally just did it last Sunday.

“I’m upset. The world is outraged. I believe there are plans for nationwide protests,” Rubin says. The broadcast cuts to in-studio ‘protesters’ with signs reading, “Princesses do not plagiarize,” “Copycat,” “Justice for Sam,” “The devil wears Prada and eats cupcakes,” and Anne with an X through it.

Rubin states his “demands,” first insisting, “Kelly, I need to come on the show to correct this outrage.” Referring to the story “Anne Hathaway ‘Stopped a Party’ with This Genius Cupcake Hack,” Rubin requests a “written correction and apology.

“I’m trying to avoid the court system, but at this point, it may not be possible. This is egregious.”

Cupcakes evoke passion, sometimes bordering on the bellicose.
