Today is the 17th birthday of Sprinkles, the darling of Reese Witherspoon and many other celebrities. Witherspoon has a longstanding relationship with the L.A. cupcakery, whose Washington, D.C., store she visited last month.

Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson accompanied Witherspoon to D.C. and the pair stopped at the Georgetown Sprinkles for some red velvet cupcake therapy. Their “whirlwind” D.C. visit syncs with this year’s delicious metropolis theme of my cupcakology practice.

A still of Nelson’s repost of a Witherspoon Instagram video.

Here’s what unfolded inside the cupcakery.

Their cakey camaraderie is also documented in The Sprinkles Baking Book, which includes the recipe for “Reese Witherspoon’s Grandma Draper’s Sour Cream Cake with Praline Frosting.”

To mark the Sprinkles birthday, here’s Nelson’s memory of opening day in Beverly Hills in April 2005.

The original store and the growing company are doing brisk business. Stay tuned for the next chapters in the great American cupcake love story.
