Cupcakes, Carter, Catastrophe

To prepare for today’s national day of mourning for Pres. Carter, I opened the book American Cake to learn Carter’s favorite was the Lane cake. It’s famously cited in To Kill a Mockingbird and it’s an elaborate, boozy recipe. Instead I baked peanut butter cupcakes for the peanut farmer turned politician.

Between the beginning and end of my baking process, L.A. caught fire and I questioned my plan to post cupcakes.

Pres. Carter was an inspirational public servant and humanitarian. Nature is powerfully humbling. Returning to literature, I’m reminded of this quote from the novel Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz: “Where there is cake, there is hope. And there is always cake.”
