To baker Don Donneruno, “Cupcakes keep the lights on” is more than a cocktail party quip. In the Before Times, he was a Long Island, N.Y., custom cake designer. When that specialty lost viability, he opened a cupcakery with a decisive mantra.
This excerpt of the preceding story speaks volumes.
“When Donneruno went to bed on March 12, 2020, he had orders for 33 cakes to be delivered that weekend. The next day, all but three orders were canceled. He had no idea when large gatherings might return, but he knew he couldn’t wait and see.
“A week later, he posted a photo of some simply decorated cupcakes on social media and offered free delivery … His phone blew up almost immediately.”
Two months after opening shop, the cupcake business is gratifying.
