2020 and the first week of 2021 proved that everything popularly known or assumed can crumble — including daily routines, one’s sense of socio-economic security, and democracy. Now comes the task of rebuilding and reformulating. The script needs to be rewritten. The recipe needs to be redeveloped. Cakes and societies only rise if they contain the proper mix of ingredients.
Sprinkles stripped a cupcake to its essence and offered a “naked banana” flavor. Unfrosted, it exudes a sense of vulnerability.
I took the cupcake to the riverfront. It felt elemental and life affirming. I also had the song “Let the River Run” in my head because I had attended a webinar that showed a clip of the film “Working Girl.” The song’s lyrics match the moment. There’s drama and cupcakes from the beginning, when the characters share a birthday cupcake while riding the ferry across the river.

The song joins other artworks on my virtual vision board of 2021 Recipe Redevelopment stimuli.

Tie an apron and turn on the oven. There is much to bake this year.
