Time tested

Consumers have set their sights on Hostess cupcakes for more than 100 years.

Pandemic or not, Hostess CEO Andy Callahan told Yahoo news that the cupcake persists as the undisputed sales leader.

“Our No. 1 product and the No. 1-selling cupcake in America is our cupcake,” Callahan said in the Yahoo interview.

The executive made the statement after the interviewer questioned which snack cake is selling best during the pandemic. The reporter rhetorically suggested the Twinkie might be the top seller.

This led Callahan to generalize about the company’s time-tested consumer appeal.

“It’s in our DNA to bring comfort and joy to consumers in good times and in times when they struggle and need comfort,” said Callahan. “So we’re continuing to do that. We do well in good economies and we do well in down economies.”

Never underestimate the power of a cupcake.

August 2020 update: A writer pens a poignant testimonial to said power. A Hostess cupcake is one of “7 Things I’d Eat if Guilt Didn’t Exist.”

I don’t know what it is about these stupid little treats, but I would eat them all the time if guilt didn’t get in the way. That chocolate ganache on top, the funny little white swirl. And the chocolate cupcake with cream inside. I’ll take a Hostess Cupcake over a gourmet cupcake with too much sweet buttercream icing anyday. But… I don’t because of guilt.

Maybe the writer can assuage her guilt with this new protein powder formulated to taste like cupcakes and Twinkies.
