It’s satisfying to use the food calendar as a creative writing prompt. I challenge myself to invoke a cupcake to represent the given day. Today is National Microwave Oven Day. When considering how to connect it to cake, my first thought was a mug cake. I’ve never tried one, so I bookmarked some recipes and toyed with a baking experiment.
Then I remembered I had learned about a premium mug cake years ago. This became a fine excuse to try My Cup of Cake, which launched at the beginning of the decade. As such, it predates the mug cake format popularized by major grocery store brands and Milk Bar Store chef/owner Christina Tosi, among others
My Cup of Cake markets itself as restaurant-quality Belgian chocolate souffle. The package includes a mug, cake mix, canola oil, and a paper cup to measure and add water. It takes less than three minutes to microwave.
