Symbolically speaking

The D.C. State Fair was founded in 2010. This is its logo.

The power of symbolism demands inquiry.

While researching the Georgetown Cupcake 10th anniversary last year, I asked the State Fair about the logo. The volunteer organization didn’t know how to reach anyone connected to the logo development. So it stands as a mystery for now but effectively speaks for itself. A cupcake is iconographic shorthand to represent D.C.

I went to the fair earlier this month. There were cupcakes to see — the logo — and eat at vendors’ booths.

Federal imagery has caught the drift. This is at the American Museum of National History. The single icon to represent food is a cupcake.

When Domino introduced a new kind of sugar this summer, it featured a cupcake in the design.

Sometimes a cupcake is not just a cupcake.
