The Hostess company is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. It introduced the swirly cupcakes in its first year, so they are also reaching the century mark.

The national #HostessSweetennial tour came to D.C. earlier this week. It was a modern affair with photogenic props and things to eat.

There were no black-and-white brochures about the early days of a paradigmatic product that continues its own production and inspires countless copies.

November update: Well, now. The limited-time birthday cupcake proved so popular that it’s being added to the regular product line. Reportedly it sold more than 31 million cupcakes. Go figure.
