When the food calendar gives you lemons …

You eat lemon cupcakes. It’s inconclusive whether today is National Cupcake Day or National Lemon Cupcake Day or both. What to do? When in doubt, celebrate both.

Good thing I’m diligent about cupcake research. If I weren’t in the habit of going to my core bakeries so obsessively, I may have missed the window to buy the Sprinkles lemon cupcake before it went off the D.C. menu earlier this month.

Knowing rain was forecast, I wasn’t planning to go out for cupcakes today. I had acquired two yesterday as part of the Sprinkles 12-day celebration leading up to today.

I saved yesterday’s procurement for today, so I was equipped with one strawberry and one gingerbread cupcake as my celebratory media.

Then the nearby cupcakery posted this.

True to Pavlovian form, I was reaching for my umbrella and preparing to answer duty’s call.

At Red Velvet Cupcakery, I chose the weekly special, a hot buttered rum cupcake. Proving worthy of a trip in the rain, it was moist and flavorful with a palatable French buttercream frosting.
