What just happened?

I made a rare trip to the suburbs yesterday to interview olive oil producers. (I’m obsessed with this Sprinkles olive oil cupcake, but that’s another story).

Of course, I diverted to bakeries for #cupcakesandbluesky field research. I intended to buy one or two cupcakes anonymously and leave. My plan was sweetly thwarted when Victoria Wu was behind the counter of her Cakes by Happy Eatery. We got to talking. One thing led to another and the outcome was epic.

As I read the list of upcoming food holidays aloud, Victoria got inspired and disappeared to the kitchen, only to return with a spontaneous creation. What was supposed to be a routine bakery visit turned into an extended meeting of the minds with an impassioned baker.

The scorecard of the day’s expedition is seven cupcakes, one mini pie for today’s National Banana Cream Pie Day (pictured below), four cakepops and two bottles of exquisite olive oil. Not pictured: one Greek lunch, one cupcake from another bakery, one Laconiko olive oil soap.
